Halitosis Treatment

halitosis

Halitosis or bad breath is commonly caused by bacteria in the mouth along with decay of food particles caused by poor oral hygiene or gum disease. Several factors can influence your breath including stress, dry mouth, dieting, snoring, age, hormones, and medical conditions. Foods such as onions, garlic, and coffee tend to cause odor for longer. Saliva usually controls the odor by washing away food particles and bacteria, however while you sleep your salivary glands slow down.

Brushing and flossing twice a day can help with odor control. Make sure you brush the tongue, cheeks and roof of the mouth to remove bacteria and food particles. Cleaning mouth guards, retainers, and dentures also prevent further bacteria from building up. Regular cleanings will remove plaque and bacteria build up and will allow your dentist to look for any additional causes of halitosis.
