Endodontics deal with the nerves of a tooth, and are commonly associated with root canals since that is the typical area that a tooth that can become infected at. A root canal removes the tissue inside a tooth, known as the pulp. It is often removed because it has become infected by bacteria which cause further tooth decay and pain. The pulp is typically damaged from having a cracked tooth, a deep cavity, or a severe injury to the tooth.
During a root canal, an opening is made in the tooth that the pulp is removed through. The inside of the tooth is cleaned out, reshaped, and filled to seal off the tooth from further damage, a crown is usually placed over the tooth to prevent further damage. If left untreated, the infected pulp can cause pus to build up at the root of the tooth, which can go into the jaw. It can destroy the bone and cause extreme pain. Infected teeth can also effect your overall health, so it is very important to treat them as soon as possible to prevent further damage. We can even create crowns in office with our CEREC equipment.
